The William Graybill McCorkle Story

William Graybill, b. 1836, Ross County, Ohio -- brother of my Elias Grable; marries Harriet Bowers, b. 1847, died March 1863. Harriet Bowers, mother, is Elizabeth Cahill sister of Sylvester Cahill. Her father William J. Bowers.

They have one son William Graybill  b. Oct. 1862

Harriet Bowers Graybill dies and leaves the infant, William. William fails to thrive on the goat milk his father provides, so the father had the McCorkle family in Three Locks, Ross County, Ohio, take the child because one of the women was nursing her own child.

Old William never took the child back, even though he married 2 more woman and had several children. Young William was raised by George and Ann McCorkle. There was never any formal adoption.  When young William was to marry he took the name McCorkle and all his children bore that name. (Information provided by Bob Casari)
