Obituary - John Collins Terry

Editor Union-Herald John Collins Terry, son of Paul and Mary Collins Terry, was born in Jackson County, Ohio, May 12, 1843 and spend the early part of his life at this place. On November 1860, near Waverly, Ohio he enlisted in the 73rd O. Volunteer Infantry, taking part in several engagements and campaigns, during the Civil War. In the greatest of these, Gettysburg, he received a wound causing amputation of his right leg, which brought him untold suffering. After the Civil War he moved to Kansas, Neosha County, living on a ranch for six years, after which he returned to Jackson County, Ohio.

August 31, 1875 he was united in marriage to Sidney Ann Clark and to this union were born nine children, seven whom survive. Elmon H., Blanche C., Marcus Howard, Elva

Ann, Clyde R, Minnie F., and E. Hoyt. He Mother Sidney Ann was taken away September 3, 1895. Soon after marriage he engaged in agricultural and mercantile pursuits and in 1894 he moved his family to Pickaway County, Ohio, locating on a farm south of Williamsport, remaining there until his declining health caused him to retire and move to the village.

September 14, 1897, he was united in marriage to Margaret Riley. To this union came four children, of whom three survive. Ina, Glenn and Elsie, who will miss the guidance of a kind father. In the early fall after contracting a deep cold, acute nephritis developed. Although he recovered slightly, complications came on which medical skill could not successfully combat.

He united with the Williamsport Methodist Episcopal Church about seven years ago and remained a member until his death. In character he was quiet and unpretentious. For every sham he had high contempt. His name has been associated with never failing honesty and neighborly sympathy. Many a heart and home has been brightened by some deed of thoughtful kindness. To those who knew him best his memory will ever be a monument to duty. No effort was too hard or sacrifice to great when he once became convinced of what he ought to do.

A man clean of life, a devoted husband and father, an accommodating neighbor, with these traits he summed up the qualities necessary for the American citizen.
