Our ancestors came from Germany to America to give themselves, and, in turn, give us, their descendants, the chance of a better life. Our debt to them is unlimited and our thanks given.

Oral family history states that when Georg was buying lumber, the sales person, not able to understand Georg’s German accent, decided on the name Winters, which he wrote down on the bill of sale. Thus, Georg Wickertsheim became George Winters.

The census taker in the 1880 census, also misunderstanding the German accent, caused the name Wickertsheim to be forever changed to Wickensimer for Mary and John. We are also grateful for that.
